Erica Cody: New release is “about getting out of a toxic relationship and knowing your worth”

Cassie Stokes

“Our industry was the first to close and it will be the last to open.”

She’s one of Ireland’s instantly recognisable young talents and she’s also one of the soundest women you will ever meet. It’s Erica Cody, and she’s back with new music.

Releasing her brand new single ‘Calculated’ today (October 9), Erica couldn’t contain her excitement about the tune. “I feel like I’ve given birth!” she tells Her.

Originally supposed to be released back in March, Erica decided to push back her new track when the Covid-19 pandemic took centre stage. She wanted the time to be right, she says.

“I wrote it all myself last summer,” she says. “It’s about getting out of a toxic relationship and knowing your worth, about knowing when someone’s intentions have changed and how you need to be treated.”

Having just turned 24-years-old, Erica is a woman wise beyond her age. ‘Calculated’ may be about leaving a toxic past relationship, but Erica’s positive outlook on life shines through.

With the track, she wanted to make people feel good. “I usually say, whatever you go through you grow through,” she says.

“During lockdown, I felt really uninspired for months. Our industry was the first to close and it will be the last to open.”

But despite the setbacks, she says she took the time as “a chance to regroup and evaluate my mental health because that was depleting over the lockdown.”

Erica has also been spending much of her free time writing for a new project for 2021 – as long as it all goes to plan. Lockdown taught her lots of things, she says, but mostly to “trust the process.”

Erica’s new song ‘Calculated’ is out now. You can check out our full interview with her on IGTV below:
