A 10-year old girl who is now pregnant after being raped by her stepfather, has been denied an abortion.
The young girl is believed to have been 21 weeks pregnant when she was taken to a hospital in Asuncion, Paraguay after complaints of stomach pains.
According to Amnesty International, the girl’s pregnancy was the result of being raped by her stepfather. Despite the hospital acknowledging the child was in danger and her mother requesting an abortion, she has been refused the procedure by authorities.
While abortion is legal in Paraguay is the life of the woman is at risk, a decision was made for the girl to be sent to a centre for young mothers.
Latin America is known for its strict anti-abortion laws. Five of the seven countries outright banning abortion are South American.
