16 people arrested for drink/drug driving on Christmas Day

Alan Loughnane

Gardaí said it is a significant increase from last year.

16 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drink or drugs on Christmas Day this year.

This is an increase from 11 the previous year and Gardaí stated the huge increase is a worrying trend.

Gardaí began their Christmas Road Safety Campaign on 29 November and since then, more than 650 drivers have been arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving.

An Garda Síochána said they are pleading with people to stop taking risks, make the right decisions and never ever drive while under the influence of drink or drugs.

Gardaí warned they will continue to have an increased presence on the roads over the Christmas period.

Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
