All Three Nominations For Taoiseach Today Have Been Unsuccessful

Ellen Tannam

The three nominations for the post of Taoiseach have been defeated in the Dáil today.

Ruth Coppinger of AAA/PBPA, Enda Kenny and Michéal Martin all failed in their efforts to be elected Taoiseach.

RTÉ report that Kenny’s nomination was defeated by 80 to 51, Coppinger 108 to 10 and Martin lost by 95 to 43 votes.

Kenny and Martin are now due to meet for talks to discuss options for government, after several weeks of confusion, and urging by the other TDs to see negotiations between Fíanna Fáíl and Fine Gael begin following February’s election.

Kenny and his government will continue to carry out their duties until a conclusion has been reached.

TD Richard Boyd Barrett of AAA/PBPA has described the current state of affairs at Leinster House as ‘a farce’.
