84 Dublin taxi drivers are being asked to provide DNA samples as part of a rape investigation by An Garda Síochána.

A woman reported to Gardaí that she had been raped on December 11 2015, and Gardaí believe they have the DNA profiler of the attacker.

The 84 men who have been asked to provide DNA samples were chosen as their car matches the taxi driven by the attacker. The type of vehicle involved in the assault has not been publicly revealed.

The incident occurred after the victim hailed a taxi on Harcourt St with the intention of travelling to Raheny in North Dublin.

According to the Irish Times, it is the first case of mass screening since the DNA database was introduced in the Republic in November 2015.
