Almost one million pounds has been raised for Manchester Dogs Home since it was targeted in an arson attack last night.

Approximately 53 dogs perished after the facility was set on fire at 7pm yesterday evening, with a further 150 thankfully being rescued from the inferno.

A 14-year-old boy is being questioned by police today in connection with the incident, which has been described as one staff member as “soul destroying”.

Celebrities including Ricky Gervais, Piers Morgan and TOWIE‘s Maria Fowler have since taken to Twitter to back a fundraising drive launched by the Manchester Evening News, with almost £927,577 raised so far for the home.

“Words are not enough. Thank you everyone, you have touched our hearts and surrounded us with love and we are truly grateful. We are overwhelmed with the offers of help, support and money. Grateful and humbled,” said a spokesperson for the home.
