Part of Schiphol airport in Amsterdam and the adjacent Sheraton Hotel were evacuated last night amid a security alert.

One person has been arrested after the airport was partially evacuated in what was described as a “suspicious situation”.

The airport has been on high alert since the terrorist attacks in Brussels on March 22nd.

A military police spokesman said “a man was arrested on the square in front of the main entrance to the airport’s plaza” at around 9.45pm (8.45pm Irish time).

“The bomb disposal squad is also on the scene and they are checking the man’s luggage.”

He added that no flights were disrupted and there were only a few departures and arrivals left for the day at the time, according to RTE.
