Andrew McGinley has shut down the Facebook page created in memory of his three children, Conor, Darragh and Carla, after cruel comments from trolls.
The three children were tragically killed by their mother, Deirdre Morley, who was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity after a trial last week.
McGinley took to Facebook to share his last post from the account, saying that in the days after the trial he had received a number of nasty comments from people on the platform. He said that everyone who "interacts and supports" the page was "amazing".
However, comments had been left about both himself and his family "from people who have no knowledge of mental health, our family or anything relating to life with mental health".
"They type with an air of confidence but when challenged by me they delete their posts," he added in a statement.
"Whether they post for 'likes' from fellow trolls, I don't know, but I think there are too many here that I don't find anywhere else. Therefore I'm choosing to go."
Sharing the statement on the Conor's Clips Twitter page, McGinley said that he thought he was made of "tougher stuff", but sadly was unable to cope with the comments. All other Conor's Clips social media accounts will remain active. The bereaved father had been using the social media pages to share memories of his three children and the charity campaigns he set up in their memory.
In a statement issued last Thursday, McGinley said that he will "continue to celebrate the all too short lives" of his three children, and "ensure they are never forgotten".
"Today’s verdict is probably the right verdict. Everyone who knows Deirdre knows how much she loved our children and how devoted she was to them," McGinley said in a statement. "Whatever the outcome of this trial, it remains that our beloved children Conor, Darragh, and Carla have died. As I write this, I’m no closer to understanding why."The thrilling new Irish novel you won’t be able to put down
