Australian police are searching for two men with Irish accents after elderly people were scammed

Laura Holland

Queenstown police have issued an appeal for help in locating two men, described as having Irish accents, who reportedly scammed some elderly people in the Deception Bay and Ipswich areas.

Local residents are claiming that the two men posed as road workers and offered to do work on the properties but failed to complete the jobs and followed up with threats to the residents when payment was due.

On Friday, March 10th, a 78-year-old is said to have refused to pay the men, who were going to put gravel on his property, until the job was complete. They began to argue with him and restrained him before stealing $1,500 from him.

Both men have been described as having Irish accents and the Queenstown police have released photos of the two they suspect.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Hogan said:

“According to the Office of Fair Trading, genuine Door-to-Door traders must give you a cooling off period of ten business days to change your mind, not take any money during the cooling off period and not begin any service during this time.

We are urging members of the community to be aware of this scam and to report any suspicious activity to police.”
