Bank of Ireland restrict users cards over fears they have been ‘compromised’

Has your card been restricted?

Bank of Ireland has restricted the use of customer’s cards over concerns they have been compromised.

The concern is with both debit and credit cards, with the bank saying that those who have been restricted will be sent out new cards in the coming days as a precaution.

In a statement, BOI said:

“When we suspect that a debit or credit card may have been put at risk of fraud we take precautionary measures and issue customers with a new card.

“A risk of fraud can arise, for example, if an ATM is tampered with or through a third party data breach.

“Receiving one of these precautionary messages does not mean that your card has been used fraudulently.”

Those affected by the restrictions will still be able to use their cards for chip and pin transactions in shops and in ATMs, however the online and contactless functions have been removed.
