Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street is going to close for at least six months as part of a major refurbishment.

According to the Irish Times 140 staff will be made redundant as a result of the work which aims to reduce annual losses of €1.2 million.

When the Dublin café reopens it will be smaller, operating on the ground floor only. The menu will also be smaller and there will be approximately 70 employees.

Chief executive John Cahill told the newspaper: “We have a choice of either permanent closure or investing in a realignment and rejuvenation of the café.

“We have chosen to underpin its future sustainability through a restructuring plan involving further investment and improvement.”

It is expected that the establishment, which unsuccessfully appealed for a reduction in rent, will close its doors next month and will reopen in September.
