Bishop Eamon Casey, whose affair with an American woman rocked the country in 1992, has died.

Bishop Eamon Casey has died in Clare at the age of 89.

The former Bishop of Galway was at the centre of the biggest scandals in the Catholic Church – up to that point, at any rate – when it emerged in 1992 that he had fathered a child with an American woman, Annie Murphy.

He subsequently spent 14 years in exile in South America.

Following his return to the country, he said: “I regret that in the past I let a number of people down. It caused great hurt to some and for that I am deeply regretful and sad.”

He died peacefully in Newmarket-on-Fergus on Monday afternoon.
