Body discovered in search for missing man in Co Mayo mountains

The man went missing after climbing Mweelrea on Monday afternoon.

A search operation in Mayo for a missing man has been called off after the body of a man was discovered.

The man, who is in his 30s, shared a photograph of himself at the summit of Mweelrea, which is near Westport on Monday afternoon.

The photograph was his last known contact with his family, who have been attempting to contact him since then.

It’s thought that the man in question was from the Mayo/Galway area, but that he’d been living in the UK for some time.

The Mayo Mountain Rescue and the Coast Guard began looking for the man on Monday. The search then continued on Tuesday morning and ended at 9pm with the Rescue 118 helicopter conducting an aerial search that evening.

Mayo Mountain Rescue subsequently requested the assistance of the Mayo Civil Defence earlier this week.

They were also joined by mountain rescuers, civil defence volunteers, gardaí and experienced members of the public.

Drone and transport support were also in operation, but the search was called off after the Mayo Civil Defence discovered a body.

They said that the search had been called off, “following the discovery of the missing person”.
