Brazil’s Zika crisis is finally nearing an end

Niamh Maher

The country has declared an end to the national emergency which began in 2015.

Brazil’s Ministry for Health released a statement to The World Health Organisation citing “the decrease in cases of Zika and microcephaly throughout the country “.

According to the BBC, officials recorded 95% fewer cases between January and April than during the same period last year.

The illness has been linked to birth defects in countries across the globe.

The Zika scare was at its peak before the Rio Olympics in 2016 with over 30 countries reporting cases of the virus. It was linked to birth defects including microcephaly, where babies are born with abnormally small heads and restricted brain development.

The World Health Organisation lifted its own international emergency in November 2016.
