700,000 LA students were told not to attend school today after a “credible terrorism threat” was received.
LAPD have confirmed that all schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District were closed with immediate effect following a bomb threat, the LA Times reports.
The call was received by a board member, and students and staff were subsequently directed to stay away from the campuses.
The threat comes just weeks after two shooters opened fire at a San Bernardino Christmas party, killing fourteen people.
The San Bernardino Christmas party shooting has been described as the deadliest terror attack in the US since 9/11.
Superindendent Ramon Cortines said at a news conference:
“I am not taking a chance of bringing children into a place, into any part of a building, until I know that it’s safe.
“I, as superintendent, am not going to take the chance with the life of a student.”
