A plane has crashed during an attempt at landing in stormy weather in Taiwan, killing 51 people.

Associated Press reports that a TransAsia Airways aircraft was making a second landing attempt in adverse weather conditions when it crashed at an airport on a small Taiwanese island.

Fire officials said that 51 people were killed in the crash, and a further seven were injured.

The South China Morning Post states that the flight took off from Kaohsiung Siaogang Airport in Taiwan at about 5 p.m. local time and was flying to Penghu’s Magong Airport. There were 58 people on board, 54 passengers and four flight crew.

Taiwanese officials said the plane caught fire after it landed “at the end of a runway.”

Taiwan has been battered by Typhoon Matmo since Tuesday morning.
