Gay Byrne has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Speaking on his RTÉ Radio show, Sunday with Gay Byrne today, the presenter told listeners of the news.
The 82-year-old said that he wouldn't be able to make next week's show as he will be in hospital.
He then explained that doctors believe that he has prostate cancer which "may have moved up into" his back.
At the helm of The Late Late Show for thirty-seven years, Gay became one of Ireland's most popular broadcasters and currently fronts Sunday with Gay Byrne, a weekly chat and music show on RTÉ Radio.
A spokesperson for RTÉ said:
"All Gay's friends and colleagues in RTÉ wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him back in the coming weeks".
