“Bruna was like a sunny day”

Hundreds of mourners gathered to pay tribute to the late Bruna Fonseca in Cork yesterday.

Friends of the 28-year-old remembered her as a loving person with one describing her as sunshine.

A vigil took place at The Lough in Cork on Sunday, January 8th. Mourners lit candles and wore white ribbons in honour of the late librarian.

Speaking at the vigil, one of Bruna’s oldest friends said she had a heart of gold.

Maria Paula said;

“Bruna was like a sunny day in the rainy season. She would welcome you with open arms. Her laugh was contagious to whoever was around and if we can personify the word resilient, it would be her.

“There was nothing in the world that would make her give up. Her dreams were just too big.”

“She was a loving and dedicated daughter and sister, a confident friend and great companion.”

Tanaiste Micheál Martin also attended the vigil.

According to The Irish Mirror, he said Ireland must call out violence against women.

“The horrific killing of Bruna again brings to mind the need to create a culture in our society that has zero tolerance for misogyny and in particular violence against women.

“All of us when we think of Bruna’s death we think of many others as well and of the absolute necessity to change the culture, to change attitudes, and to stamp out violence against women”.

Bruna was killed in her apartment in Cork on New Year’s Day.

A 29-year-old man has been charged in connection with her murder.

The Brazilian national will appear before court today, January 9th.
