A disappointment for anyone headed to Bundoran.
One of Ireland’s most popular beaches, Bundoran in Co. Donegal is closed for at least the next three days pending the results of testing for possible pollution.
A warning has been published by Donegal County Council advising that swimming may result in illness. Authorities have been contacted and testing of the water is underway.
The closure warning was issued on Monday (22 July) and is expected to be in place for 72 hours.
Donegal County Council has said that the reason for the closure is “suspected storm water overflow due to localised heavy rainfall,” causing the quality of the water to deteriorate.
Donegal, along with nine other counties, had been the subject of a status yellow rainfall warning over the weekend.
The action follows several instances of similar closures on Dublin beaches. Swimming bans were put in place at eight Dublin beaches last month following a sewage leak from the Ringsend wastewater treatment plan.
A similar warning is in place for Port Arthur beach in Gweedore, which is expected to be closed for the next two days.
