Cabinet to consider international travel to return for July 19

The Cabinet will meet to discuss the issue today.

International travel restrictions could be eased from July 19 for those eligible under the new EU Digital Green Certificate system.

The Cabinet will meet today to discuss the potential of easing travel restrictions outside of Ireland for those who are fully vaccinated, have a negative PCR test, or who can prove they have recently recovered from Covid-19.

RTÉ News reports that the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has also advised that outdoor events could resume in June while indoor dining could also return in July.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said last night that while he could not give a date for the return of international travel, it would be around the time of July 19.

He said he “expected” the current ban on international travel to be lifted once the new certificate system commences.

Ryan added that the aviation sector will be informed of a specific date later today and that focus will need to be put on airports to “minimise disruption of long queues.”

“We saw in Heathrow that when they introduced flights they had large queues so we have to try avoid that,” he said.

This comes after the Cabinet sub committee proposed yesterday that indoor dining could resume from July 5, while larger indoor events accommodating up to 100 people should be allowed from this date.

Outdoor dining and beer gardens are set to return from July 7, while hotels and guesthouses will reopen from June 2.

An official announcement from the government regarding Ireland’s next stages in reopening the economy is due today.
