On Tuesday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be greeted by new president Catherine Connolly in Dublin while US efforts continue to broker a ceasefire in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The visit comes a day after Zelenskyy met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
Micheál Martin previously said he looked forward to ‘reiterating Ireland’s unswerving commitment to standing with the people of Ukraine for as long as it takes’ during Zelesnkyy's visit today, per Extra.ie.
Mr Zelenskyy was met on the tarmac by the Taoiseach following his late-night arrival in Dublin on Monday.
Both leaders are to hold a bilateral meeting today, marking the first-ever state visit by a Ukrainian president to Ireland.
This morning, Mr Zelesnkyy and Ukraine's first lady, Olena Zelenska, are due to make a courtesy call to President Connolly at Áras an Uachtaráin in the Phoenix Park.
Mr Zelenskyy is also scheduled to attend the launch of the Ireland–Ukraine Economic Forum alongside Tánaiste Simon Harris.
Then this afternoon, the Ukrainian president is set to deliver an address to parliamentarians at Leinster House, following an introduction by the Ceann Comhairle, Verona Murphy.
Back in April 2022, Mr Zelenskyy gave a landmark speech to the Dáil via videolink, saying Ireland had not been neutral regarding the ‘disaster’ Russia inflicted on Ukraine.
Micheál Martin said that the arrival of the Ukrainian leader in Dublin comes at a ‘critical time’ for Ukraine.
Ukrainian and US officials have been revising the US-drafted proposal that emerged from negotiations between Washington and Moscow, amid criticism that it leans too heavily toward Russian demands.
However, Mr Zelesnkyy did say in Paris yesterday (Monday, December 1) that the peace plan currently 'looks better', though the issue of Ukraine retaining control of its territories was described as the most difficult topic on the table.
