Well, this is awkward.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Prior to last night’s meeting between England and Iceland in Nice, plenty of supporters were laughing, joking and singing away as the atmosphere continued to build towards the crunch match.
As we all know, Britain has been at the centre of the world’s collective attention this week following the Brexit vote. The people of the United Kingdom have opted to leave the EU by a margin of 52% to 48% but we’re certain that not every English football supporter voted ‘Leave’.
Like fans of every country when they gather for a singalong, there’s always an element of bravado and defiance but these chants before the game are just incredibly ironic.
We wonder if they’re happy to sing about not being in Europe anymore?
