Ian Huntley has died aged 52, following an attack in prison last month.
The child murderer had been on life support in hospital, after suffering significant head trauma following an attack with a makeshift weapon by another inmate at HMP Frankland on 26 February.
Earlier it was reported that Huntley was hours from death after his life support machine was switched off on Friday.
Huntley had been serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 40 years for murdering ten-year-old friends Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in August 2002, in a crime that horrified the nation.
He was a target in prison due to the brutality of his crimes and he had been attacked several times in the past.
The BBC reported that the suspected attacker of Huntley is 43-year-old triple killer Anthony Russell.
