Cigarettes to be sold in plain boxes and pouches from today on

After much debate, cigarette and tobacco products will be sold in plain packaging in Ireland from today on.

The law, which falls under the Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Act, was first introduced in March 2015, and will see a complete overhaul of the products..

This means that packages and pouches will be blank, leaving out any logos, trademarks, colours and graphics.

The measure will try to reduce the amount of people smoking in the country, and hopefully deter young smokers from buying tobacco products.

This follows the measures taken in countries such as France, the UK and Australia.
