The Citizens’ Assembly will be looking at the issue of abortion with regards to Fatal Foetal Abnormalities.  

It was announced today that Judge Mary Laffoy will be chairing the committee, which was initially set up to look at a number of social issues in Ireland, including abortion. The programme for government are allowing the Commission six months to come up with proposals on how best the country should proceed across a range of sensitive issues. However, since RTE broke the news, Taoiseach Enda Kenny is being accused of back pedaling on the issue of repealing the eight amendment. Fatal foetal abnormality is defined as “a medical condition suffered by the foetus such that is it incompatible with life outside the womb”.
