Cold snap: temperatures set to plummet overnight

Anna O'Rourke

Wrap up and get the heating on, folks.

It may feel mild enough this morning but don’t get used to it – things are set to take a turn.

It’ll be a fresh, sunny day across most of the country with some light showers in western parts of Ulster and Connacht.

We can expect brisk temperatures of between 7 and 9C this afternoon, though it will dip below zero later on tonight.

Met Éireann is predicting that it could get as cold as -2C tonight, though it’ll be milder in some places and up to 4 to 6C in Atlantic coastal areas.

Little rain is expected.

The cold snap overnight is expected to bring plenty of frost across the country, so make sure to take it easy if you’re travelling on the roads late tonight and early tomorrow.

Things should pick up over the weekend, as high pressure tomorrow will bring mild, more settled weather.

It’ll be all change before the weekend is out as we’re due heavy rain on Sunday.
