There are fresh concerns over the extradition of Madeleine McCann suspect, Christian B.

The 43-year-old German man, who is currently serving a prison sentence for the 2005 rape of a woman in Portugal, was extradited from Italy to Germany two years ago on a drug charge.

Christian, who cannot be fully named for legal reasons, was charged with the rape of the 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz, the same resort where McCann went missing in 2007.

Sky News reports that Christian is now appealing his extradition arrest warrant under claims that it is not valid. His legal team claim that the Germany needed to seek permission from the Italian authorities to charge him for the drug related offence.

His appeal is expected to be considered soon and prosecutors fear he could disappear if he is released.

Christian, who was known to travel between German and Portugal for many years, is currently the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case.

He was living in the Praia da Luz area around the time that the three-year-old disappeared. Phone records have also suggested that he was near the McCann apartment on the night that the toddler was last seen.
