‘Continuing to monitor’… some schools will remain CLOSED today

Some schools in areas worst hit by the frosty weather conditions will remained closed today as temperatures are set to dive to -8C.

There was heavy snowfall and frost overnight, which saw a number of services cancelled, including some flights and buses.

The Department of Education and Skills has said schools nationwide will remain open today, however it would be best to check with your school this morning in case any changes have been made.

A spokesperson told RTE News: “The Department is continuing to monitor the situation nationwide and will follow any advice from the National Emergency Coordination Group.”

In Co Longford, primary schools are Newtowforbes, Drumlish, Ballinalee, Ballinamuck, St.Emer’s, St. Mel’s, Ardagh and Melview are all affected, while secondary school, Ardscoil Phádraig, Granard is also closing.

In Mayo, all national and secondary schools will remain closed in Westport and Louisburgh.

Also in Mayo, Belcarra NS, St Louis School in Kiltimagh is closed, Castlebar, St. Patrick’s NS and St. Angela’s NS are closed and Davitt Coillege, St. Joseph’s Secondary School and St. Gerald’s College have decided not to open until 11.30am.
