The actor had a career that spanned six decades, with notable roles in Doctor Who, No Hiding Place, The Bill, Thatcher: The Final Days, and Crossroads.
However, his final role was in Coronation Street, in which he played Alan Hoyle from 2011, taking over from John Woodvine.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Michael McStay, an actor of the highest standing and talented writer, whose career across stage, screen and radio spanned over six decades," the statement confirming McStay's passing read.
The actor died 'at peace', passing away on Sunday after lunch with his sons.
He died of heart failure.
Fans have paid tribute to the star online.
"Sad to see that Michael McStay has passed away. Absolutely adored him in Corrie as Alan Hoyle in the John Stape storyline," one person wrote.
"Both him and the late Jean Fergusson were brilliant in the basement episodes."
Another penned: "RIP Michael McStay. I had the great pleasure of meeting him twice, last time in April 2024. Such a lovely man, witty & on the ball in his 90's. Known for playing Moberley in #DoctorWho The Seeds Of Doom (1976), he's also starred in The Avengers & The Persuaders!"
