Debenhams workers have occupied a closed store in Waterford city centre today, seeking further talks on an agreed redundancy package.
The six workers are among the 1,000 or so employees who lost their jobs earlier this year when 11 Debenhams stores across the country shut.
RTÉ News reports that the workers are calling for new talks between Debenhams, liquidators KPMG and representatives from the Mandate trade union.
This is the most recent occupation of a closed Debenhams store by workers, who are aiming to discuss how online sales could impact their agreed redundancy pay packages. Other protests have also taken place in Cork and Dublin.
Michelle Gavin, who worked in Debenhams for 27 years said: “This occupation is a peaceful protest but a necessary escalation to make sure we are not left with nothing.
“We have been left high and dry without the redundancy package that had been promised before.”
Workers organised the occupation following reports that the remaining stock in the Waterford store was to be packed up.
