Deirdre Jacob disappearance upgraded to murder investigation by Gardaí

The disappearance of Deirdre Jacob has been upgraded to a murder investigation by Gardaí.

The 18-year-old was last seen near her home at Roseberry, Newbridge, Co Kildare on July 28 1998. Authorities have been investigating her disappearance for 20 years, but new information received recently by Gardaí has caused the case to be upgraded to a murder investigation. Garda Chief Superintendent Brian Sutton is appealing for anybody with information on Jacob's murder to come forward. He said Jacob was:

"... A young woman starting off her life, who had just completed one year at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London. "Deirdre had enjoyed her life in London and was looking forward to returning to college that September when her life was taken away on or after the 28th July 1998."

When she was last seen in Newbridge, Jacob was wearing a T-shirt, dark trousers, and white footwear. She was also carrying a black canvas bag with a yellow Caterpillar (CAT) logo that has never been found. CCTV footage released by Gardaí shows Jacob walking at 2.35pm near shopfronts along the Barretstown Road from the direction of Newbridge.
