5-year-old boy dies after being hit by van in Co. Derry

The accident occurred yesterday afternoon in Derry.

Police in Derry are investigating a road accident that claimed the life of a 5-year-old boy.

Ollie Simmons-Watt died after a van collided with his bike on Thursday afternoon.

The accident occurred in the Irwin Avenue area of Limavady, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The young boy was rushed to hospital following the accident but was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

PSNI sergeant Amanda McIvor issued a statement following the harrowing accident.

She confirmed that a police investigation is now underway.

Ollie was reportedly hit when he was cycling on his bike in the area.

The incident was reported shortly after 3.40 pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the accident.

McIvor stated: “It was reported shortly after 3.40 pm that a van had struck a child in the Irwin Avenue area.

“Ollie was on his bike in the area at the time of the collision.”

Ollie was transferred to the hospital by the Northern Ambulance Service but sadly died from his injuries.

“Our enquiries are continuing.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident.”

Anyone with footage, including dash cam, has been asked to contact the police.
