Director of Last Tango in Paris has confirmed that butter rape scene wasn’t consensual

Bernardo Bertolucci is facing criticism after admitting the rape scene in the 1972 film was not consensual.

The film director of 1972's Last Tango in Paris was filmed back in 2013 saying that actress Maria Schneider was unaware of the scene that was going to take place. According to LadBible, Bernardo said that he and 48-year-old Marlon Brando decided to change the script without telling 19-year-old Maria. The director said the two men wanted to surprise her and they wanted "her reaction as a girl, not an actress." In the recently found video (which contains content that some viewers may find distressing), the director says he feels guilty but doesn't regret filming the rape scene without Maria's known consent. He said

"The sequence of the butter is an idea that I had with Marlon in the morning before shooting." "I think she hated me and also Marlon because we didn't tell her that there was that detail of the butter used as lubricant." "I didn't want Maria to act her humiliation, her rage. I wanted Maria to feel, not to act, the rage and the humiliation. Then she hated me for all her life."

Since the interview has been brought to light, many actors have voiced their disgust at the behaviour of Brando and Bertolucci.
