Don’t get caught out by this phone scam doing the rounds

Resist the urge to check.

Irish phone users are told to be wary of these scam calls.

A new phone scam is being reported by members of the public. It involves a missed called from an unknown international phone number. When someone calls it back, a charge is made.

According to Breaking News, this is called a ‘premium callback’ scam.

The calls can be at any time of the day and for a short amount of rings. When someone calls back, out of curiosity, they will hear a recorded message saying, “Hello, you have reached the operator. Please hold.”

As they hold they are being charged a hefty amount of money for the call.

Only today, I had a voice message but no missed called. The message lasted for 3 seconds and then cut off. The phone number began with +26 and was clearly not Irish as it was very long.

It can affect people who have credit phones, as well as phone bills.

If you receive a call of this nature, resist the urge to call them back. If it’s an important call, they will ring again.
