Dublin City Council to erect flood defences as Storm Brendan draws near

Dave Hanratty

Take note.

You may have heard that Storm Brendan is approaching.

Status Orange weather warnings and Red Marine warning have been issued by Met Éireann, with the early hours of Monday morning expected to really kick things up a notch, weather-wise.

The Irish Coast Guard has warned the public not to approach breaking waves and to avoid exposed beaches, cliffs, piers and harbours during storm conditions.

In the capital, meanwhile, Dublin City Council will be taking the precaution of erecting flood defences and closing specific car parks on Monday morning.

“We have been monitoring the forthcoming unsettled weather following advice from Met Éireann and the National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management,” noted a DCC statement issued on Sunday afternoon.

“As a result, we will be erecting flood defences and closing the car parks at Clontarf and Sandymount from 6am on Monday 13 January.”

Dublin City Council noted that the expectation is for the two car parks to re-open later on Monday afternoon.

Some flood gates along the River Dodder in the Ballsbridge area may also be closed as a precautionary measure.

“We will continue to monitor the weather over the next few days,” the DCC statement said.
