Dublin County Council this week approved plans to open the city's first rooftop cinema and new restaurant on the top floor of the Trinity Street carpark. The site would also house a gallery and exhibition area on the building's fifth floor.

Located just off Dame Street on the south side of the city, the plan was proposed by chef Niall Davidson, who opened allta restaurant in Dublin in 2019.

The Irish Times reports that Davidson has been granted permission to transform the top floors of the Trinity Street carpark into the restaurant/rooftop cinema for three years. Separate plans to include a cocktail bar have been denied.

Bashview, the owners of the Trinity Street car park, said the proposal would provide “a unique attraction to combat the decline in visitor numbers witnessed over the past 18 months.”

However owners of nearby bar 4 Dame Lane, Pawnbeach, have expressed concern that the plan could “easily morph into a full rooftop cocktail bar with only a small element of restaurant.”

They asked that limits be imposed by the council to stop the cinema and restaurant becoming “a cocktail bar or pub with limited food offerings.”

It is not yet known when the open air cinema and restaurant is expected to open.
