Chessington Zoo has confirmed that eight of its Humboldt Penguins were killed when an urban fox gained access to Penguin Bay one night at the end of the June.

One other penguin was injured in the attack but has made a full recovery.

The zoo has said that they are investigating what happened as Penguin Bay was only built in 2015 and had special measures put in place to deter animals, especially foxes.

The five adults and three infants were part of a group of 28 penguins at Chessington Zoo and the workers are said to be shocked and saddened by their deaths.

The remaining penguins have been relocated to a secure area while they take additional measures to secure the bay.
