Elderly woman killed in Dublin named locally as Mary Bergin

Katy Brennan

Neighbours say she was well-known for being involved with the church and local community.

The victim of an alleged murder in Dublin city on Wednesday has been named locally as Mary Bergin.

The woman, who was in her 80s, was found with fatal injuries inside a property at Seville Place, Dublin 1, at around 11.50am.

A Garda investigation has been launched into the death of Ms Bergin, who also known as Maura.

A woman in her 40s has since been arrested and is detained at Store Street Garda Station. It’s understood that the suspect was known to the victim.

She is being questioned by Gardaí this morning who are not believed to be looking for anyone else in connection with the pensioner’s death.

Ms Bergin was well-known in the area for being a “big part” of the local community and very involved with the church.

Locals told The Irish Times that they were shocked by the horrific news.

“I lived facing her, and she never passed me by, she always said hello. I have a little dog and she’d always pet the dog,” one neighbour said.

“We are in shock … It’s funny the way nothing affects you until it’s right at your own hall door.”

“She used to drop in and have a cup of tea with me… I’m very, very sorry for the family,” another said. “We all pull together, this is a lovely community.”

Another was quoted describing her as an “angel”.

Gardai have said they are continuing to “investigate all the circumstances” and appealing for witnesses who might be able to help their investigation.
