Currently, in Ireland, there is no free safe and legal access to abortion services, and it will remain like this until the 8th Amendment is repealed in a referendum.
Opinion polls undertaken by various media organisations have clearly shown that a majority of Irish people would like to see this changes and allowed access to abortion, particularly in cases of fatal foetal abnormality and incest.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has come under criticism in the Dáil recently for the government's decision to hold a Citizen's Convention to decide what path to take in terms of holding a referendum, when holding a referendum straight away would be arguably more efficient.
Kenny has said that he won't be influenced by opinion polls on the issue.
