Facebook has turned on its safety alert for people in Brussels.
The object of the alert is to notify people on their Facebook friends list to say that they are safe. The feature was first rolled out on the social network following the attacks in Paris in November.
The people of Brussels are in shock this morning following a number of explosions in Zaventem Airport and the Malbeek Metro Station.
According to the BBC there are as many as 13 fatalities following the explosions.
Eye-witness accounts on social media have been documenting the events as they unfold with videos and pictures being shared.
