A US judge had ordered that Dassey be released from prison earlier this week.

A federal appeals court in the United States has blocked the release of Brendan Dassey from prison despite the fact that his homicide conviction had been overturned.

Earlier this week, a judge had ordered that Dassey be released from prison, under supervision and pending court developments. It was expected that Dassey would be released from prison by Friday.

The judge’s order came after events in August of this year, when a federal judge in Milwaukee overturned a conviction of murder in relation to the death of Teresa Halbach in 2005, arguing that Dassey was coerced into a confession by investigators.

In 2007, Dassey, the nephew of Steven Avery, was convicted of raping and killing Teresa Halbach and sentenced to life in prison.

The events surrounding Halbach’s deaths and the subsequent sentencing of Avery and Dassey was made famous by the Netflix series Making a Murderer, which will return to Netflix for a second season in the near future.

According to Associated Press, the state Justice Department asked the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in an emergency motion to block Dassey’s release.

Dassey’s attorneys released a statement in response to the decision, saying they were “disappointed more than words can say”.
