Ellen Tannam

Everyone has had financial problems at one stage or another, and many people worry about paying rent and bills once the end of the month comes around.

One Scandinavian country is trying to resolve the financial problems of its citizens in an interesting way.

The Finnish government have begun to plan something very unusual to tackle the problems of poverty and unemployment in the country. They plan to give every single citizen a basic income of €800 monthly, and ceasing other benefits payments altogether. (The Independent)

Tim Worstall writing in Forbes, has said it is a fairer and smarter way of dealing with social inequality, and will increase the bargaining powers of people who are already in the workforce.

A poll showed that 69% of Finns support the scheme.

The idea of a basic income has been gaining traction around the world, with popular support shown in Switzerland for the model in recent months, although the government there oppose it.
