He announced the news this morning.

Former Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy has resigned from his position as TD to pursue a career in international co-operation, human rights and democracy.

In a statement released this morning, Murphy said that the decision to step away from his representative role in Dublin Bay South was a personal one and that it was a “huge privilege” to serve his constituency.

“Leaving frontline politics is not something that I am doing without having considered the matter fully,” he said.

“In my late 20s, I worked in the UN system before I returned to Ireland to get involved alongside many other people looking to play their part in the national recovery at the time. And now, after 12 years of service and having reflected upon things, I have made the decision to return to international affairs.

“I have resigned my seat today, not to leave politics entirely, but to pursue a career in the area of international co-operation, human rights and democracy.”

Murphy was first elected to the Dáil in Fine Gael in 2011. He became Minister for Housing in 2017 and remained in the position until last year.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said in a statement this morning that he was “personally and professionally” sorry to see Murphy resign.

“I wish Eoghan every success in his future career, and perhaps we may see him return to play a role in Ireland in the future,” he said.

Murphy was replaced as Minister for Housing in June 2020.
