Forty children in Co Cork had a miraculous escape today when the bus they were travelling in went on fire.

The children were travelling to the ploughing championships in Stradbally Co Laois from a variety of primary schools in Kenmare when the blaze occurred.

It is reported that the fire started just after 7am as the bus came into Ballyvourney in Co Cork. One child smelt the burning and alerted a teacher.

The fire is believed to have started at the back of the bus, and locals and parents are praising the teachers and driver for their prompt evacuation of the vehicle.

The bus was immediately stopped and all passengers were moved away to safety as they awaited emergency services.

The fire was brought under control by Macroom fire brigade, but serious damage was done to the bus.

The pupils were brought back to Kenmare by another bus and it has been reported that nobody was injured during the incident.
