The investigation is ongoing.

Gardaí are investigating a stalker who has been spotted following women who were sea swimming in the north east of the country.

A number of women came forward to Gardaí with complaints of several incidents occurring at Salterstown, Co Louth over the last few months.

The bathing spot is popular in Dundalk Bay and has a walkway alongside it that sees 50 to 100 women swimmers of all ages every day.

This week, two women were left startled after they were separately tailed by a man in a Black Volkswagen car.

One of the women told The Mirror: “I’ve noticed him a lot over the past few months but tonight he pulled up behind my car when I was in the water and when I got back into the car he followed me when I drove off.

“Thankfully I wasn’t alone. I rang it into the Garda station and it turns out there have been multiple reports of him doing it to other women. ”

Another added: “This fella has been following women for months, it is very scary and terrifying. The gardai believe he is a danger to women.”

A man in his 30s has been arrested by Gardaí after they surveyed the area.

He was brought in for questioning but has been released without charge, but a file is being sent to the DPP.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who has been stalked or harassed around Salterstown beach to contact Ardee Garda Station and make a statement.

They are also urging women to not go swimming there alone and to make sure someone is with them for safety, and if the suspect is seen in the area to immediately contact them.
