Gardaí called on parents to educate their children on the dangers of taking part in such activity.
Gardaí have issued a warning about a social media trend known as “ghosting” after a youth in the southern region was hospitalised taking part in the challenge.
This ongoing trend challenges a person to lie on a roadway with a sheet placed over them in an attempt to stop oncoming traffic.
When the vehicle stops, the reaction of the driver is then filmed and uploaded to social media.
Gardaí called the trend “extremely irresponsible” and said it posed a danger to both those taking part in the ghosting and to motorists.
The warning comes after a girl was hospitalised for injuries sustained to her back, torso and ankle taking part in the challenge recently. It’s understood that while the injuries were minor, she spent a number of days in hospital as a result of them.
“An Garda Síochána are urging people not to engage in this social media trend. Gardaí are particularly appealing to parents to educate their children on the dangers of participating in such activity and to highlight the importance of being seen while using Irish roads,” a Garda statement said.
