The global birth rate has almost halved since the 1950s.
The findings,
published in the Lancet journal, showed that close to half of countries around the world are producing fewer children than necessary to maintain their populations.
The research showed that between 1950 and 2017, there has been a 49.4 percent decline in fertility rates across the world.
Data from 195 countries and territories was considered in the study.
This decline in birth rates is more apparent in countries that are more economically developed. This is partially due to better access to contraception, better education around sexual health, and better family planning information.
However, this considerable decline in birth rates has not affected the overall population of the globe, which continues to grow.
This steady increase has been due to lower mortality rates and better health care around the world.
