Haley Bieber has revealed that her pregnancy with her son Jack, was a "surprise" due to a "scary" medical condition she had.
The American model and Rhode founder welcomed her son into the world in August 2024 with her husband, Justin Bieber.
Speaking to presenter Mary Alice Haney on the SHE MD podcast, Haley revealed her pregnancy was a surprise.
“It was a surprise. She told me this was going to happen because she was like…” Haley explained, referring to podcast co-host Dr Thaïs Aliabadi, who is also her OB/GYN.
“And I told her like, ‘Don’t get pregnant!’” Dr Aliabadi chimed in before Hailey opened up about the condition she had before getting pregnant.
“I had a septum in my uterus, and Dr A kept saying, ‘Well, we need to look at this and keep an eye on it before you get pregnant because it could potentially be an issue,'” Hailey recalled.
“‘I don’t really know. We’ve got to see. I might have to give you a small surgery for it. Not sure.’ And I was like, ‘Okay. Well, I’m not thinking about getting pregnant right now, so we’ll just cross that bridge when we get there.’ And then I magically got pregnant,” she gushed.
Dr Aliabadi detailed further: “And then she calls me, and she’s like, ‘I’m pregnant!’ And I’m like, ‘No!’”
Dr Aliabadi then went on to explain what a uterine septum is and what the risks of it are.
“Uterine septum is genetic. Again, we’re born with it. So basically, imagine you have a normal-shaped uterus. But inside the cavity of the uterus, imagine this little wall that comes in, this thin wall that comes in,” she stated.
“You can have a mild, moderate or a severe septum. Basically, we measure it on ultrasound. If it’s less than 1 cm, it’s mild. If it’s 1 to 2 cm, it’s moderate,” she continued.
“[Hailey’s] was moderate. It affects 1 to 3% of women, and with moderate, you have a higher risk of miscarriage during the pregnancy. And so the risk for her was about maybe 25 to 40% risk of miscarriage, and a 10 to 20% risk of preterm delivery.”
Hailey then opened up that those percentages were a “bigger scare” for her.
“Because we realised as the baby was growing, the septum was, you know, expanding. Everything was opening and doing what it needed to do, luckily,” she said.
Dr Aliabadi agreed: “I never forget, as I was telling her, ‘Well, these are the risks.’ And she looked at me, she’s like, ‘You know what? I believe that everything’s gonna work out fine.’ Remember this? And I looked at her, and I’m like, ‘I think so too.’”
Hailey later concluded: “I was convinced I was going to go into labour early because of my mom’s history… but my body had its own plan.”
