Major Irish airlines Ryanair and Aer Lingus have announced major changes to hand luggage rules for 2026.
With January now in full swing, it's fair that a lot of us will be considering a getaway to somewhere a bit warmer.
However, something to keep in mind is the new rules that could land you with some unexpected hefty fees at the airport.
Dublin Airport has relaxed its long-standing liquids rule which allowed passengers to take just 100ml onboard flights.
New-generations scanners allow travellers to now take up to 2 litres of liquid with them.
Additionally, large electronics such as laptops and tablets do not need to be removed from bags while going through security.
It is important to remember, though, that not all airports have the same technology, so remember to check if the rules will be different on your return journey.
Ryanair recently increased their hand baggage allowance, meaning that passengers can now take bags measuring up to 40 x 30 x 20cm onboard.
You can take one personal bag of this size onboard for free, but if you go over the allowance you may face a fine of €70.
It's also important to bare in mind items that you can't take on board, which include weapons, sharp objects, explosives, flammable substances and certain battery-powered devices. This is not an exhaustive list, so check Ryanair's website for more information.
Aer Lingus offers travellers two 10kg bag options. You can either pay €9.99 to take your 10kg bag onboard with you, or drop your bag off at bag drop for free of charge and have it stored in the hold during the flight.
If you fail to prebook a 10kg bag to bring in the cabin with you, you can face a €35 charge.
Travellers are still welcome to take a personal bag with them, which can measure up to 40 x 30 x 20cm.
Items that are prohibited to take onboard include firearms, sharp objects, tools, explosives and stun devices.
