Candidates across the country are waiting with bated breath today as Ireland goes to the polls for the Local and European Elections.

Polling stations are open until 10pm tonight, with more than 2,000 candidates contesting 949 local authority seats and 41 people in the running for eleven MEP seats in three European constituencies. Details on the candidates running in each local constituency are available here, while a list of those vying for a seat in Europe is available here.

While a polling card is not needed to vote, all those hoping to have their say will need to have previously been registered on the Register of Electors and may be asked to produce identification at the polling station.

Voter turnout has been estimated at ten to 15 per cent so far today, with up to 25 per cent having already cast their vote in the electoral area of South and West Kerry.
